BUILDING YOUR NEW RECON

BUILDING YOUR NEW RECON

from Recon News

12 July 2023

For the past few years, there's been a fair bit of feedback about the lack of an update to the Recon platform.

Your constructive feedback has always been important to us, and we want to acknowledge that we've been quiet for a few years (specifically about development) and we understand you might assume we weren't listening or doing much.

But the reality is quite the opposite.

For a few years, the engineering team have been working very hard to do a complete overhaul of the system - building a new and solid foundation, which would make it easier to release future updates and features. We're super excited that the team has made great progress with the redevelopment of the site and mobile app and we're already having it tested.

"Why has it taken so long?"

The Recon platform has been around for over 23 years, and a lot of the technology and coding, specifically for the back-end and web site, dates back more than 10 years.

"But I signed up to be a tester, and I haven't seen it yet."

We've so far only opened it up to a few hundred Recon members, so that they can get a glimpse of the future of Recon, give us their feedback, and help us find any bugs before releasing the updates to a wider number of beta-testers. If you're already signed up, keep an eye out for the beta-test invite.

"What's in the initial update?"

The initial phase of the pilot only includes the most important core features: there's an update to the 'Guys List', Profiles and Messaging. Over the coming months there'll be many other new and existing features being added to the pilot, as well as additional functionality for the core features.

One of the positive things about this new version is that it will be mobile-friendly, from the start (unlike our current web site) giving mobile app users the option of using the website (PWA) on mobile with a much-improved user experience. The other benefit of using the PWA is that it won't be subject to restrictions on things like adult content, currently imposed by the iOS and android app stores.

"Why do we only tell you this now?"

Again, we believe it's important that we not only acknowledge our silence, but we also want to acknowledge that we have been listening to you. There's no point talking about what we all knew from the past.

We want to talk about the future of the Recon platform. In the coming months we hope to be able to share even more of what we're working on, and we want you to know how excited we are with the progress we are making, in building your new Recon.
